Emma Velterop completed her PhD in Earth System Science, where her research focused on trying to understand household climate vulnerability through behavioral decision science and satellite image analysis. She approached this by blending theory and practice from the social sciences—through qualitative interviews and quantitative surveys—and computer sciences—through satellite image analysis using machine learning—with community engagement and knowledge from the natural sciences and civil engineering. Prior to joining Stanford, Emma worked at the European Space Agency and ETH Zürich in remote sensing. She also has an M.S. in Geophysics, focused on climate resilience, from Stanford and an M.Eng. in Civil Engineering from UCL.
